Why is a spring cleanup important for my fish pond?

If you love your fish pond  as much as we do, then a spring pond cleanup/clean out service, or general pond maintenance for your North Fork Long Island pond is essential for the health and overall well-being of your fish as well as other aquatic life. Over the winter, dead plant debris and leaves from the surrounding yard or even run off, may settle and decay between rocks and at the bottom of your Pond.

Especially on Long Island and Suffolk County, where we experience cold winters, the ecosystem in your pond may take longer to kick in. By removing decaying plants and other debris from your fish pond, it ensures better water quality and a chance for your ecosystem to get started. Decaying plant debris, leaves and even possibly dead fish or frogs may create harmful nitrate spikes in your pond. This may cause other fish and aquatic life to stress and possibly die.

When is the best time for your Clean Out Service?

The best time to perform a pond clean-out is the early spring, before your water garden completely awakens from its winter dormancy – ideally before the water temperature in the pond creeps above 55º F. If a clean-out is performed when the water is warmer, after bacteria colonies form, the balance of the ecosystem will again be thrown off and your pond will go through another “green phase” before the bacteria colonies re-establish themselves again.

Your spring fish pond cleanup should include, but not limited to:

  • Draining the Pond
  • Placing fish into containers
  • Power/pressure washing entire Pond
  • Cleaning all filter media
  • Refilling the Pond and adding the proper balance of water treatments to kickstart your ecosystem
When Sound Shore Pond reintroduces your fish and aquatic life back into your Pond we handle your fish with care and take our time especially with your large fish. Using a proper balance of stress coat and dechlorinator is mandatory. This is why it's very important to hire a qualified Pond Contractor with fish knowledge or a CAC like Sound Shore Pond. CAC's or "Certified Aquascape Contractors" are highly trained Pond Contractors who construct and maintain Ecosystem Ponds and as well as a variety of other water features. Hiring a landscaper who claims to "do it all" may cost you more money and grief in the long run or even wipe out all of your fish and other aquatic life.
